Intriguing Title for a Book

In November, Maryland Bible Society published a new book by Dr. Barclay Newman, retired Senior Translator of the American Bible Society.  The title has caused a bit of a stir among many. It is entitled "Scripture Stark Naked". Sounds different, doesn't it?   Dr. Newman's purpose in taking the key words related to the message of  Jesus Christ in the Gospels and making them transparent to the reader is a very important.  In our world today, we want people unfamiliar with the message of Jesus to be able to get a sense of the scripture within a cultural context as well as being faithful to the translation of the text.  Dr. Newman writes: "An adaptation differs from a translation in that it imports and integrates imagery foreign to bhe biblical culture, while remaining faithful to the meaning of the biblical text. For example, "when you pray, don't prattle and rattle like hypocrites - those prancing pious porkers, seeking praise in a pigsty. Earthly praise is their full reward."  Scripture Stark Naked examines passages from the New Testament in the words of Jesus dealing with authority, power, love, the Word, Mission, Message and Moment.  Copies are available from Maryland Bible Society at the cost of $7.00 plus shipping; order this unique work by a highly respected and renown scholar and translator.
